When you pack your suitcase to go on vacation, it's easy to think about your swimsuit, sunscreen, and sunglasses. But... what about your smile? Oral hygiene often takes a back seat when we're away from home. Bringing a well-stocked dental kit for travel can save you from more than one scare and help you enjoy the summer with peace of mind.

A Albiol Dental Clinic, we often encounter patients who have returned from vacation with tooth sensitivity, cavities or gum problems that could have been avoided with good prevention. For this reason, we have prepared a short and clear list of the 5 items that cannot be missing from your summer dental kit.

1. Toothbrush (better if it's foldable)

The toothbrush is, without a doubt, the king of the toiletry bag. If you travel by plane, you will be very well advised to opt for a foldable travel toothbrush: it takes up little space, protects itself and is more hygienic. If you are undergoing orthodontic treatment (such as Invisalign), you may need to bring an extra brush to use outside the home.

Extra tip: Make sure it has soft filaments that clean well without damaging the gums, and remember to change it if it has been more than three months.

2. Toothpaste suitable for your needs

Not just any toothpaste will do. Bring a small one (travel size), but one that you usually use. If you have sensitive teeth, look for one that contains potassium nitrates or active fluoride. If you are undergoing a whitening treatment, check with us which one you can use during the summer.

Avoid unfamiliar toothpastes that can cause discomfort or imbalances in your mouth. In the summer, the increased consumption of sweets, soft drinks or meals outside the home can put more pressure on your teeth, so it's worth not improvising.

3. Dental floss or interproximal brushes

It is common for us to forget to floss during the holidays. But using it is key to prevent cavities between teeth, especially when we eat out more often or when we snack between meals. A travel dental kit is not complete without dental floss or, if you prefer, interproximal brushes for wider spaces.

Practical advice: There are individual formats of dental floss with a handle, ideal for travel and easier to use anywhere.

4. Small-sized mouthwash (and alcohol-free)

A good mouthwash can be your ally to have a feeling of cleanliness and freshness, especially if you are outside for a long time or in areas where you cannot brush your teeth. Choose one without alcohol to avoid the effect of dry mouth, very common in the summer due to dehydration and high temperatures.

You can find mouthwashes of 100 ml or less, suitable for hand luggage. If you have sensitive gums or a predisposition to halitosis, don't leave it out of your routine.

5. Protective box for splints or appliances

If you are wearing a discharge splint, Invisalign, retentions or a removable prosthesis, make sure to bring a rigid and ventilated case. It's key to keeping everything clean, safe and in optimal condition.

Many patients tell us that, while traveling, they have lost their splint or it has broken because they did not store it properly. This can mean an unexpected expense and inconvenience during the rest of the vacation. With a simple box, you avoid problems.

Other useful options to complete the toiletry bag

  • Sugar-free chewing gum with xylitol: They stimulate salivation and help maintain pH balance.
  • Refreshing mouth spray: for a clean mouth feeling between brushings.
  • Disposable dental wipes: useful for children or situations where you can't brush your teeth.

Take care of your smile wherever you go.

Remember that summer is for enjoying yourself, but also for taking care of yourself. Your travel dental kit is a small investment in well-being that can save you discomfort and emergency visits.
